Root Canal Procedure

It is a tooth saving procedure which needs to be performed perfectly and precisely to restore the functional efficiency of your tooth. There are basically three layers of a healthy normal tooth:
Enamel : this is the outermost protective layer of the tooth which is visible.
Dentin : this is the second layer of tooth which is soft when compared to enamel and sensitive also.
Pulp : this is the innermost layer of a tooth. It’s the vital part of tooth through which tooth gets its blood and nerve supply.

When  Root Canal Treatment needs to be perform?

When the decay/caries/crack reaches the innermost pulp layer or is nearer to the pulp Root Canal Treatment is the choice of treatment to save the tooth.

How is the procedure done?

  • Firstly the cavity is made to open the pulp chamber and locate the pulp canals. (every tooth has different no of canals).
  • Next the chamber and the canals are cleaned properly with hand and motor driven instruments known as reamers and files and various irrigating solutions.
  • After cleaning, the canals are given a proper shape for the root canal filling and lastly the prepared canals are sealed with a rubber like material (Gutta Percha) and a sealer.
  • At various steps of the root canals radiographs are taken so that the root canal filling is done precisely and to the point.

Is the procedure very painful?
The procedure of root canal is performed under the effect of local anesthesia and thus it is not at all painful!!!

How many visits are normally required for the root canal treatment?
Almost every cases we perform Single Visit Root Canal Treatment at our clinic. However some cases might require multiple visits.

Is it necessary to place the crown on the  tooth after  root canal treatment is done?
It is mandatory to place the crown  once root canal is completed because the tooth becomes brittle after the root canal and if not protected by crown it can fracture due to forces. So to cover the tooth with crown is necessary.

Will I be able to chew normally after root canal and crown are done?
Yes you can chew normally once the crown is placed. It has to be maintained by proper cleaning and routine yearly check ups.

WHAT IS CROWN AND BRIDGE??

CROWN: Generally a crown is placed on a root canal treated tooth or large restorations (filling)to avoid fracture of the tooth.

BRIDGE: it is a type of fixed prosthesis generally used to replace the missing tooth/teeth

WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS TYPES OF CROWN AND BRIDGE MATERAILS?

Based on the material used for the fabrication of the bridge it can be of following types:

1) Zirconium Crowns

This is the latest material used for the dental crowns and bridges which are made by Computerized process on CAD CAM machines. This is totally metal free and esthetically the best.

Being totally metal free it allows the passage of light and thus mimics the translucent property of the tooth giving a more natural look.

2) Porcelain fused to metal crown (PFM ceramic):

These are the crowns which comprise of two layers and are made either manually or with CAD CAM process.

  • Inner metal layer
  • Outer ceramic layer

3) Metal crowns:

These are the conventional crowns. But being fully metallic they are very clearly visible and due to other drawbacks these crowns are now almost replaced by the newer advanced PFM and Zirconia Crowns.

HOW LONG THE BRIDGE OR FIXED TEETH LAST??

If properly maintained the bridge can last for a pretty long time.

MAINTENANCE REQUIRED AFTER PLACEMENT  FIXED TEETH:

Twice daily brushing and flossing are more than sufficient to maintain the fixed teeth in a good state for a long term.

Also once or twice a year professional cleaning, as advised by your dentist will be beneficial.
