Post and Core
A post and core is a type of dental restoration that is utilized when there is inadequate tooth structure remaining to support a conventional restoration. When there is extensive tooth structure loss due to advanced dental caries or tooth fracture.
A small post is inserted into the root canal space of the tooth which remains partly in the root and a portion remains outside the root to provide support for the restoration or core build-up after performing root canal treatment (RCT). Commonly it is made up of metal or fiber. Mostly the post and core is covered with a crown.
